Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, an Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer on homosexuality was in the offing after the Supreme Court of India decriminalized same-sex marriages in 2017. However, one might wonder why it took so long. It would not be entirely wrong to say that there has never been a better time than the present for message-driven films. Although there is a lot of fuss about the need and potency of such movies that carry some sort of moral or social message, most do not accomplish much more than providing fleeting entertainment. We take a look at the movie in the Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan film review.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is not so much about homosexuality as it is about homophobia. The train scene early on in the movie sets up the rest of the story nicely, and the film never deviates from its course. Karthik (Ayushmann Khurrana) and Aman (Jitendra Kumar), hailing from a middle-class milieu are in love with each other. Aman’s father (Gajraj Rao) inadvertently catches the duo making out on the train. Unable to come to terms with what his son is doing, he tries to persuade him into marrying a girl from their neighborhood. However, the two are inseparable and fight against all impediments that come their way.
Notwithstanding similarities to Ayushmann’s earlier works, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan will entertain audiences, who will walk away with a smile. Oftentimes, feel-good movies such as this one are unable to fully convey the social message that they intend to highlight. And while that might be true of every Ayushmann movie, his fans, of which there are quite a few, will beg to differ. In some ways, his movies do subtly convey their message, and this is more than one can say for most other movies that seem to miss the mark by a mile.
Several factors contribute to making an Ayushmann movie work at the box-office, and his performance is only one part to that end. In many instances, his acting is dwarfed by better performances. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is no different, as we see the supporting cast steal the spotlight on more than one occasion. Gajraj Rao, Neena Gupta, and Manu Rishi do admirably contributing in a big way to the overall appeal of the movie.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’s screenplay is tight for the most part, and any lapses that do occur do not hinder the flow of the film. The direction is on the mark, and while some scenes do stretch more than needed, little damage is done.
If you are an Ayushmann fan, you will not want to miss Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. However, even if you are one who does not watch all of his movies, it will not disappoint you. Admittedly, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is not going to change the world, but then which film does. However, what it manages to do is entertain the viewer in the best possible way without resorting to crude humor, and that is good enough.
