Malang Film Review – Night of Reckoning

Malang is a drug-fueled revenge saga from director Mohit Suri. Apart from stylish cinematography, this mess of a movie has nada. We take a look at Mohit Suri’s latest endeavor in the Malang film review.

Aditya Roy Kapur parties away in Goa – Malang Film Review

Malang begins with Advait, a brawny Aditya Roy Kapur, hammering his fellow inmates. Cut-to five years ago, we see a much calmer Advait embarking on a solo trip to Goa. Here, he meets a free-spirited Sara (Disha Patani). The two go partying under the influence of drugs and fall for each other. Soon enough, tragedy occurs, disrupting their new romance.

Between flashbacks and the present time, Malang manages to keep the audience invested in its story. Even after the intermission, there is a cleverly-plotted twist that is well-disguised. However, the filmmakers aren’t content with that and want to thrill the audience some more. Courtesy of this over-ambitiousness, we see a deus ex machina in the plot that takes the viewers by surprise in the worst possible way.

Anil Kapoor, as the wild cop Anjaney Agashe, tries his best to infuse some life in an otherwise kitschy plot. Kunal Khemu does his bit as a conscientious investigator Michael Rodriguez. However, both these actors cannot salvage a rapidly sinking ship. Aditya Roy Kapur and Disha Patani, as the misguided lovers, fail to resurrect the film that is dead and buried by shoddy screenplay and writing.

The vistas of Goa are draped in toxic hues as substance abuse is rampant, and for a while, it seems as if popping an Ecstasy is the only way to achieve bliss. Our lover boy is helping the gal score off items on her bucket list. I wish they hadn’t doped as much and as often as it is shown. Whether you agree or not to their way of life takes nothing away from the fact that it makes for an entertaining watch while it lasts. However, the ensuing events so terribly mar the film that as the end credits appear, you will find yourself relieved to walk out of the theater. The last half hour or so of Malang is wretched, and whatever guilty pleasure is to be had until then rapidly evaporates.

Those moviegoers that relish a watertight screenplay will not be able to forgive the screenwriter for the deus ex machina in the finale. For the viewers that can overlook it, Malang might be a casual diversion and nothing more.
