Imagine the worst movie that you have seen, and Nanu Ki Jaanu comes close to it. In fact, it is so awful that you wonder why on earth did Abhay Deol (who has previously acted in notable films) decide to do it. At Film Comments, we take a look at why Nanu Ki Jaanu is best left alone in the Nanu Ki Jaanu film review.
Revolving around a small-time swindler, Nanu (Abhay Deol), the story is about him losing his roguishness after being involved in a road accident. To compound his misery, a ghost, Siddhi (Patralekha) has intruded his apartment scaring the daylights out of him. He and his cronies try their best to get rid of the spirit, but all their efforts are in vain.
To such an extent is the wafer-thin plot plagued by stupidity that even the likes of Rajesh Sharma, Brijendra Kala, and Himani Shivpuri cannot salvage the film. Nanu Ki Jaanu never entirely sticks to one genre. Apparently, the filmmakers lack clarity and cannot adhere to a particular style. In the end, it ends up being an appalling mishmash.
You cannot conclude as to which part of the film is worse, as it is so consistently flawed. Some movies are so bad that they are entertaining. Failing to belong to the latter category is the last straw for the film to attract viewership. More thoughtfully-penned dialogues might have spared Nanu Ki Jaanu from reeking of sloppiness. In this case, lazy writing is hard to ignore.
Even if you had to ponder long and hard to come up with any redeeming aspect about Nanu Ki Jaanu, you would not be able to do so. The film, at one point, alarmingly reduces itself to being a promotional message on road safety. Only, in this case, it takes the better part of two and a quarter hours. The sole positive that those associated with this project can derive is not to repeat the same faux pas next time.
If Abhay Deol is serious about resurrecting his acting, he will have to be much more cautious when it comes to committing himself to a particular script, especially with this debacle behind him. Patralekha, too, will have to be more judicious in picking her projects, even if that means more patience in waiting for an engaging story to come her way. When a newcomer indulges in such absurdities as Nanu Ki Jaanu, it can only hurt their chances of bagging a decent film later on.
If you still venture to watch this one, disregarding what you have just read, you will have only yourself to blame. Dumbfoundedness will be the prevailing sentiment running through most moviegoers as they exit the cinema hall after experiencing this shoddy filmmaking.
