David Dhawan’s Main Tera Hero is entertaining in parts. The story revolves around Seenu (Varun Dhawan) who loves Sunaina (Ileana D’Cruz), a pretty student studying in the same college. However, Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri), the daughter of a don (Anupam Kher) who is quite hilarious, loves Seenu. Angad (Arunoday Singh), a cop, is in love with Sunaina. You get the picture, don’t you? Despite sounding clichéd, the story has got a twist or two.
Sidekicks, Rajpal Yadav and Saurabh Shukla, provide the audience with quite a few chuckles. Although Varun Dhawan tries hard to be funny, he isn’t thoroughly convincing. This is one of the shortcomings of the movie. However, he is still a newcomer and will get better with time. The dialogues are hilarious but not consistently enough.
This movie must not be compared with the David Dhawan movies of yesteryear. Main Tera Hero tries hard to entertain, but falls short largely. This cannot be attributed solely to an inexperienced Varun Dhawan’s by and large ineffectiveness at making the audience laugh, as even the screenplay could have been better. The songs are also mediocre. There aren’t many action scenes apart from a few in the first half, and thankfully too.
Ileana D’Cruz runs through her role with ease, and Nargis Fakhri is passable. However, Rajpal Yadav stands out in his role, and clearly saves the movie from being a very average one. The audience will like Anupam Kher as the don who will do anything for his daughter. After Rajpal Yadav’s performance, his is probably the second best of the movie.
Main Tera Hero is not a complete letdown. One can enjoy some scenes, particularly ones involving Rajpal Yadav and Anupam Kher. The story of Main Tera Hero is evenly paced and gets particularly interesting in the second half. This is a one-time watch, and doesn’t disappoint only if one hasn’t too many expectations attached with it. It may be far from the funniest movie that one has ever watched, yet it is not a bad way of spending an evening with your loved ones.
