Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior depicts the Battle of Sinhagad between the Mughals and the Marathas. There is a lot that moviegoers can look forward to as Tanaji Malusare and Udaybhan Singh Rathod slug it out in the Battle of Sinhagad fought in the 17th century. Made for a wide audience, the filmmakers do exceptionally well as we see in the Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior film review.
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior Film Review
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is Om Raut’s Hindi-language directorial debut. Co-produced by Ajay Devgn, the film begins with a young Tanaji Malusare as he blossoms into a fierce warrior. Soon, he becomes the right-hand of Maratha Emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Playing Tanhaji Malusare, Ajay Devgn is seen with Kajol who portrays his wife Savitribai Malusare. The rogue Udaybhan Singh Rathod is depicted onscreen with panache by Saif Ali Khan.
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior does not waste any time and dives straight into the action. The film moves briskly toward its enthralling finale. At a crisp two-and-a-quarter-hours, it does not bore the audience with drab details. Aided by crafty editing, the film skims over certain episodes that might not interest a general audience.
From its commendable VFX to Keiko Nakahara’s sweeping cinematography and an immersive background score by Sandeep Shirodkar, the film gets most things right. Apart from its technical features, the high-caliber acting by Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan is sure to keep you invested in it. Particularly, the latter, who gets into the skin of his character with a menacing perfection.
Kajol plays the onscreen wife of Ajay Devgn’s Tanaji Malusare with a poise befitting the character that she is portraying. Although, sharing the same relationship with the actor in real life might have aided her in that regard.
And while we are talking about the performances, Sharad Kelkar deserves a mention for his spot-on portrayal of the Maratha Emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He seems so much at ease with his character that it would be difficult to ignore him in any future iterations. Rock On!! star Luke Kenny as Emperor Aurangzeb makes his mark even with limited screentime. There are a few others who perform convincingly bolstering the overall impact of the film.
If you are looking to watch a period drama without having to worry about sitting through to the end, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is par for the course. Although by no means flawless, one can overlook the minor glitches considering it is a period film that poses unique challenges vis-à-vis some others.
Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, and Kajol do not let their fans down as the trio is extremely watchable and entertaining. If you are one of those who do not care much for period films, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior might be less of a challenging watch. History buffs will appreciate the film, with probably their only grouch being that the film is light on nuances. However, in catering to a wider audience some sacrifices have to be made.
Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior film review rates Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (3.5 / 5)
