With an ensemble cast, Ocean’s 8 tries to pull off a diamond heist. Danny Ocean’s sister Debbie, with the help of seven other accomplices, is intent on robbing a priceless necklace while she is on parole. In the Ocean’s 8 film review we take a look at what does and doesn’t work for the movie.
So there you have the story in a nutshell. The execution of the robbery by Debbie along with her gang consumes most of the running time. From the ensemble cast, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway’s performances are by far the best. Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean and Cate Blanchett along with Sarah Paulson add heft to the film. And for Rihanna’s fans, it will be an added attraction to see her in a prominent role.
As a heist film, Ocean’s 8 lacks the edginess. Not only does the movie lack fluidity, everything doesn’t even make sense. Apart from that, as the protagonists never really face any significant roadblocks while pulling off the heist, the whole affair ends up rather one-sided.
We are left grappling with a mediocre script and some uneven performances. Although there are moments that feel moderately engaging, in totality, the movie never resonates with the kind of intrigue one expects from a heist movie.
Although an exciting soundtrack makes it easier for the viewers to negotiate the inconsistent narrative, Ocean’s 8 doesn’t impress overall. For the most part, it is strung with messy dialogue, only occasionally coming up with some witty banter.
Admittedly, suave cinematography aids in making the movie visually appealing, but that too fades against characters that aren’t particularly likable. You couldn’t care less about whether or not they can successfully carry out their plan. With a lackluster script, even the talented bunch of actors end up delivering inconsistent performances. It is not just the acting that is a letdown but the sketchily written characters sans enough depth that fails to impress as well.
Oceans’ fans who were looking forward to this one might find it occasionally entertaining. Apart from the ardent followers of the film series, rest of the filmgoers will be unsatisfied with this installment. Upon exiting the theatre, Ocean’s 8 will evaporate from your thoughts faster than the ladies can pull off the robbery.
