Even though Manmarziyaan is two and three-quarters of an hour long, and it occasionally feels like a CD on repeat, you don’t mind it. The vivacity of Rumi will make you sit through this movie. Caught between her carefree life and two men, she will have to find out what she wants by just living through it. Her experiences will make her a better and more mature person. Rumi’s growth during this journey will charm you.
There is an everyday feel to Manmarziyaan, and the lack of much melodrama does serve it well. Although Rumi’s character is at times over-the-top, the director Anurag Kashyap doesn’t quite let that hamper the overall impact of the film. On the contrary, that is an asset.
Vicky Kaushal and Abhishek Bachchan play Vicky the unstable DJ boyfriend and Robbie the mature fiancé rather well. Although, it’s Taapsee Pannu portraying the ebullient Rumi who is the mainstay of the film. Much of its effectiveness is due to her believable performance. That the casting was spot on is visible from the actors playing their respective parts admirably.
Apart from that, the rather vibrant soundtrack goes well with the story and never takes you away from the main plot.
The final act is a bit stretched, and the audience might find the extended runtime catching up at some point. There are some who might walk away thinking that the film could have been a tad shorter. Although, there is enough meat in the story to keep you hooked.
In all probability, you have seen the same plot narrated many a time. In Manmarziyaan the same screenplay is played out with a certain degree of freshness that keeps you from whining about it.
The supporting cast does their bit, and a couple of them stand out as well. The film doesn’t compromise on the lighter aspects of the screenplay that drifts in and out rather seamlessly.
The ending may not appeal to everybody in the audience. Though you can’t say it is left open to interpretation, one can still talk about it and ponder over in retrospect. Did the characters make the right decision? Was there scope for an alternate ending? And if so, would that have been more fulfilling?
Although the film is a romantic drama, it refrains from taking itself too seriously. Also, I liked the fact that it gave ample scope for the central characters to introspect. Leaving the camera lingering for just that bit longer does make an impact at times. In this case, it helps to raise the bar and makes it a more thoughtful and even a thought-provoking film to some extent.
The movie will appeal to a broad spectrum of the audience. The younger viewers will swerve towards Vicky Kaushal’s character while more mature viewers might want to go with Abhishek Bachchan’s character. In the end, it doesn’t matter who you pick as your favourite character, the movie, on the whole, works well.
