Shot on the beautiful island of Vis, Croatia, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, much like the 2008 film Mamma Mia! is brimming with hit songs of the Swedish band ABBA.
In Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Donna Sheridan’s (Meryl Streep) daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) reminisces her mother’s younger years leading up to her pregnancy, and eventually Sophie’s birth. She and Sky (Dominic Cooper) are going to have their first child as she plans a grand reopening of the Hotel Villa Donna on Kalokairi.
As we see the three suitors of Donna when she first met them, their romances are at the heart of the film. Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Harry (Colin Firth), and Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) have their youthful selves played by Jeremy Irvine, Hugh Skinner, and Josh Dylan respectively.
As for Donna’s friends, Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski), their young counterparts are played by Alexa Davies and Jessica Keenan Wynn. And finally, last but not the least, Lily James portrays the young Donna.
The ensemble cast dazzles as it frolics while singing some of the great ABBA numbers. Although the best tracks might have been in the first movie, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has its fair share of memorable Abba songs like Andante, Andante, My Love, My Life, and Fernando among others. And if you aren’t content with the feast of pretty faces on screen and some beautiful songs, you have the gorgeous island of Vis to admire.
You can only go into a movie like this one if you care for romantic musicals. Otherwise, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again isn’t going to be your cup of tea. I for one, admittedly know many of the Abba numbers by heart, and this was in no way less a treat than the first movie.
Although Amanda Seyfried’s Sophie might evoke fond memories of the original movie, it is the young Donna played by Lily James that takes your breath away. She is utterly charming as she romances the three lovely young men. You cannot but be mesmerized as she and the others weave their magical spell.
Cher plays Donna’s mother, and her late entry into the film will bring a smile to the faces of all the Cher fans. Also, watch out for Andy Garcia. Pierce Brosnan plays Sam Carmichael with poise as he did in Mamma Mia! And although Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård don’t have the same screen time as they did last time around, they nevertheless regale the audiences with their presence.
Go and watch Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again if you often find yourself humming to ABBA numbers. Even if you aren’t much into pop music, there is enough pizzazz to leave you grinning on your way home.
