When quite a few of the actors are making their debut in the film, you don’t go with great expectations naturally. And frankly all the actors expect is the film to be a decent launchpad. F*ugly is one of those films that has newcomers trying to make an impression. Whether they do so is the question that everybody would be asking.
The honest answer to that is no. None of the actors in the lead role impresses much. F*ugly is the story of four childhood friends and how they take on a corrupt cop. There is nothing new in the story, and as a viewer you do get frustrated watching it.
Arfi Lamba, who was last seen in Prague, a widely acclaimed film, cannot salvage this one. In fact, Jimmy Shergill, who has given many a fine performance, is equally disappointing. The film loses the plot through many scenes that could have been best avoided. It equally tends to drag, and pivotal points in the film which should have delivered fail to do so.
There are not only new actors in the film, but it is also directed by a young director, Kabir Sadanand. This makes the task of delivering a fine overall performance even more challenging. A tighter script might have certainly helped in this regard. Crucially, the film doesn’t have well-etched out characters. The first half of the film is certainly wasted where the director could have done much better with developing the characters much more effectively than is done.
It is almost sure that the debutants are going to get better roles in future films, and one can expect fine performances from them. To be honest, if one has watched films like Rang De Basanti, which set the standard for films of this genre, there are chances you will end up wanting your ticket money refunded to you if you happen to watch this film.
What could have been an inspiring film comes off as a disappointment also considering the fact that F*ugly probably was made with the intention of motivating the youth and spreading social awareness against the callous attitude of society at large particularly towards issues concerning safety of women.
