Fanney Khan Film Review – Anything for His Daughter

There is no gentle way to say this, but Fanney Khan is an appalling movie. Anil Kapoor plays a father who wants his daughter to be a singing sensation and he is going to stop at nothing to make his dream come true.

Fanney Khan Film Review

A remake of the Belgian film, Everybody’s Famous, Fanney Khan goes to great lengths as a father to see that his daughter achieves success. When Lata (Pihu Sand), Fanney’s daughter, is mocked and ridiculed every time she takes the stage, the only people to believe that she has talent are her parents – although her mother (Divya Dutta) is more realistic than her father. Somehow, Lata never seems to talk politely to her father, and it appears as if she holds a grudge against him. As fate would have it, Fanney accidentally meets Baby Singh (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), who is her daughter’s role model and a singing superstar.

Fanney conveniently kidnaps Baby Singh and tells her manager to give Lata a chance to perform on stage in exchange for her freedom. His friend, Adhir (Rajkummar Rao), accompanies him in this as the duo keeps Baby Singh in an old factory where Fanney once used to work. Will this ploy of Fanney succeed in securing the chance he wants for Lata?

You don’t even have to nitpick to find problems with Fanney Khan. Most of the film’s shortcomings stare right in your face. The film sends out so many wrong messages that it is hard to keep a count by the end. For one, it shows a father so desperate for his daughter to achieve the success that eluded him that he doesn’t think twice before kidnaping a famous singer. As if that is not enough, the film stumbles from one implausible scene to another. By the time you reach the last act, Fanney Khan has drawn out all of your patience.

You have probably seen kidnappings in several movies where the kidnappers aren’t professional criminals. They are driven to do it for a particular reason that differs between each film. And even in this film, there is the kidnapping that when taken out of the context, seems to have its hilarious moments wherein the two kidnappers fumble after having committed the act. That is as far as one can go in saying anything praiseworthy about this film. The rest of it involving Lata trying to achieve stardom without any proper guidance goes downhill and rather quickly.

Suspension of disbelief is a prerequisite to enjoy some films. The problem with Fanney Khan is that even after that it is not at all entertaining. No doubt, there are a few scenes that are funny, but that’s about it. There is nothing that keeps you from leaving the theater in utter bewilderment at what you have just seen, and that not in a positive way. In fact, Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao despite having to work with a poorly written script still manage to eke something out from it. Both of them have a significant part to play in some of the best scenes of the movie, of which there aren’t many.

For a film that has singing as a crucial element, the songs are either remixes of yesteryear songs and the ones that aren’t, generally fall flat. It is ironic that for a movie that should have brought out the best in people, leaves you with characters that are either plain dumb or even selfish.

Fanney Khan is undoubtedly one of the biggest duds to have hit the silver screen this year. Even though it has some big stars, there isn’t anything that you can take home from this film.
