Escape Room Film Review – A Game No More

Escape Room is a psychological horror that takes the wildly popular concept of the physical adventure game to screen bringing together characters from disparate backgrounds trying to make it alive. It is a thrilling ride even if marred by clumsy acting and a less than convincing ending concocted by writers Bragi F. Schut and Maria Melnik and director Adam Robitel. At Film Comments, we take a closer look at the movie in the Escape Room film review.

Escape Room Film Review

In a typical escape room, participants have to work in synergy as they solve puzzles and decipher hidden clues to complete the task. If this sounds like something you would like to engage in or watch other people grapple their way through, Escape Room will make for an entertaining diversion.

Early on in the film, the audience gets to know the participants of the game. Each of them is having their reasons to take part in it. So, while the actors try and get a grasp on their characters, the viewers will soak in the ambiance of each room. Do not expect finely developed characters here and if one does not find the rooms interesting enough, nothing will work for the viewer in the movie.

Although, if you are one of those who finds themed-rooms engaging, seeking a satisfying ending is expected. However, that might be the most significant shortcoming as it will not appeal to most viewers.

As and when a sequel materializes, we will know if the concept of escape rooms works as a franchise. For the present, what-you-see-is-what-you-get is true for Escape Room. Do not go looking for symbolism as there is none. As for the ending, it is best to abstain from deliberating over the possibilities as there is only a straightforward one that does not leave much scope for interpretation.

One does not necessarily associate a film of this genre with highly proficient acting. What is on display here may not appeal to every palate, but there is enough to hold the film from falling apart. Although none of the actors stand out, no one misses the mark entirely so as to do the movie any disservice. As in the game at the center, the acting too is best seen as a combined effort and not individual performances by Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Jay Ellis, Taylor Russel, et al.

Catering to a niche audience, Escape Room does not disappoint. Although, given the juicy premise, one would have thought that it might have done better so as to keep one interested in a sequel. In some ways, Escape Room squanders the potential, and that is a letdown. Taking inspiration from the cult horror franchise SawEscape Room is far from your perfect movie in the subgenre. However, that does not mean that it fails to entertain, even if that is not much more than cursory.

If one is looking for a casual distraction that almost instantly evaporates from the consciousness upon exiting the cinema hall, Escape Room fits the bill nicely.

The Escape Room film review rates Escape Room 3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)
