Divergent is an engrossing film based on the novel of the same name. It is based in Chicago of the future. Society has been divided into five distinct factions. Each faction has its own characteristics. Beatrice or ‘Tris’ as she is called has chosen her faction, namely, dauntless. However, her aptitude tests were inconclusive because she showed tendencies of more than one faction. She is a divergent and mustn’t reveal this to anybody, else her life will be under threat. Divergent humans are dangerous according to some as they cannot conform to the rules laid down by the government.
Tris is part of the dauntless faction, however, she has to undergo some initial tests as do other inductees. She doesn’t perform well in the first couple of rounds and is at risk of being expelled from the dauntless faction. However, in the later rounds of the test, she does remarkably well. This is so because she is a divergent, and now that she has done so well, her true identity might be revealed.
Can Tris save herself by not letting others know her true identity? This makes for an extremely intriguing viewing. Four (Theo James) is the leader of her group at dauntless, and though initially shown a very strict individual, gradually he falls for Tris. Eventually, he helps Tris in her struggle to hide her true identity. Shailene Woodley has played the part of Tris remarkably. She displays a range of emotions that will truly engage the audience. The story of Divergent is quite unique and this holds the film in good stead as the viewer remains absorbed throughout the duration of the film.
Kate Winslet plays the antagonist, who eventually comes face to face with Tris. Can Tris triumph in the duel with her? This makes for an interesting viewing. The supporting cast has also performed their parts flawlessly. The background score is effective in drawing the viewers into the plot. Science fiction fans are sure to like this film, however, its appeal is likely to be more widespread as those who are not particularly into science fiction films may also be entertained by this film.
