Carrying on with setting new trends in Bollywood, Vidya Balan plays a female detective in Bobby Jasoos. Set in Hyderabad this tale is about Bilkis Ahmed aka Bobby (Vidya Balan) trying to create a name for herself as a private investigator. At first she tries to get employed with a popular detective agency. However, after failing to do so, she decides to start her own agency.
She receives cases from an elderly man, Anees Khan (Kiran Kumar), who doesn’t divulge much about himself. However, he pays Booby handsomely in return for her services. Bobby gladly accepts the first two cases, however, at the third instance she suspects that something is amiss, and sets out to investigate more about this gentleman who brings her the cases.
What are the intentions of this individual? What is his true identity? Will Bobby succeed in solving this mystery? This makes for much of what transpires in the second half of Bobby Jasoos.
Apart from this there is Tasawur (Ali Fazal), a famous TV personality, who initially doesn’t approve of a marriage proposal with Bobby, however, later he changes his mind. Also, Bobby’s detective pursuits are not approved by her father (Rajendra Gupta) who doesn’t talk to her.
There are a lot of positives to talk about Bobby Jasoos. It has a good cast, the music and songs are acceptable, and there is a story that keep you engaged until the end. However, on the downside, there are points in the film when you will fail to grasp everything that is going on. It seems like it is all too scrambled, and lacks clarity. What begins as a promising film doesn’t quite live up to the high expectations. However, Vidya Balan’s stellar performance just about manages to salvage the film from being mediocre.
Ali Fazal, who plays the role of a TV personality, plays a major part in the film, especially in the second half. Although nothing much is shown about his work, he does give a good performance. If you don’t go with too much expectation from this film, it is likely that you will like it. If the innovative costumes of Vidya Balan don’t manage to keep you entertained, then her acting prowess will definitely impress you.
