In Ric Roman Waugh’s Angel Has Fallen, President Allan Trumbull recommends Secret Service Agent Mike Banning for the Director of Secret Service. While on a fishing trip, drones attack the President and his entourage. Only the President and Mike escape this onslaught. Later, Mike finds himself on the run from the FBI who want him for his alleged involvement in the vicious attack. Can Mike sustain the viewer’s interest in this third movie in the Fallen franchise? Let us see in the Angel Has Fallen film review.
Sharply choreographed action sequences in Angel Has Fallen keep the audiences glued to the screen. The opening drone attack, a chase through the forests, Clay Banning scorching the enemy, and a climactic scene that brings down an entire building, all have the audience enthralled. Between all of this, there is a nonsensical story, which never fails to entertain. The score by David Buckley keeps you invested in the action. Jules O’Loughlin’s cinematography is expansive and provides the backdrop to the narrative.
Gerard Butler as the fallen Secret Service Agent Mike Banning pulls off incredulous scenes with Liam Neeson-esque credibility. What bolsters Angel Has Fallen is Nick Nolte’s quirky Clay Banning. He gets the best lines and does full justice to his character. Morgan Freeman, as President Trumbull does not have the same screen time but does his bit. Jada Pinkett Smith as FBI Agent Helen Thompson misfires and so does Mike’s staid wife, Leah played by Piper Perabo. Danny Huston as Wade Jennings, leader of Salient Global and Mike’s former Ranger teammate is convincing in an understated performance.
Angel Has Fallen‘s fastpaced action keeps the audience engaged. Although the screenplay feels contrived and clichéd, and the viewer can see every plot twist from a mile away. After the success of Olympus Has Fallen and the somewhat less glowing London Has Fallen, the third installment in the franchise has plenty of gripping moments. Angel Has Fallen will satiate the audience it is primarily for, who will enjoy its adrenaline-fuelled action.
Those looking for an intelligent action thriller are barking up the wrong tree. Although Angel Has Fallen is devoid of logic, it does compensate with winning action sequences, a lean narrative,
If you are willing to suspend your disbelief for a while, there is fun to be had here. The film hits the high notes when Gerard Butler’s Mike is on the run and finds refuge in Clay Banning. The duo pulls off some memorable scenes right to the end. I can recommend Angel Has Fallen to the action aficionado and in particular those who have enjoyed the first two films in the Fallen franchise.
