When two stalwarts of Bollywood come together in a movie, you expect to have a good time. Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor play father and son respectively in their latest dark comedy, 102 Not Out. Does the movie entertain the audience? Let us see in the 102 Not Out film review.
And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years. Mostly playing to this aphorism, 102 Not Out‘s main protagonists are a father-son duo. A 65-year-old Babulal Vakharia (Rishi Kapoor) has accepted his old age only to lose his joie de vivre. On the other hand, his father, Dattatraya Vakharia, played by Amitabh Bachchan, is a 102-year-old who knows no other way than to live life to the fullest. Will the latter be able to help his son find his lost rhythm?
102 Not Out manages to evoke laughter from the audience, although the many somber moments in the film will most likely resonate with the viewers as well. You take pleasure in the father-son repartee as much as you enjoy their interaction with Dhiru (Jimit Trivedi), a caretaker.
In retrospect, many of the scenes feel doctored to bring the story to its desired conclusion. At odd moments, the movie slips into the realm of melodrama. It is here that you wish the film had a tighter narrative. When you see characters enveloped in varying degrees of melancholy, it doesn’t elicit anywhere near the same reaction from the audience. At other times, the genuineness of the characters’ emotions makes you connect with them. In spite of a few glitches, 102 Not Out manages to entertain you.
As 102 Not Out is a message-driven movie, the efficacy of the individual scenes plays second fiddle. It is a deftly-acted movie where the actors play to the strengths of an engaging script that despite falling short in patches, keeps the audience sufficiently involved.
Interestingly, even though the movie is about old age and living every moment to its maximum, many younger audience members will realize that the story encapsulates life in general and age isn’t a factor. They will manage to take away something from the movie as well.
There are a couple of songs that are hummable, and although nothing to write home about, they at least don’t distract you from the story. With two veteran actors, 102 Not Out will appeal to audiences from all milieu as it proves to be a refreshing dark comedy.
