The camaraderie between four friends through the ups and downs of life is at the crux of Shashanka Ghosh’s Veere Di Wedding. After months of anticipation is the film worth the wait? Veere Di Wedding film review follows.
Kalindi (Kareena Kapoor Khan), Avni (Sonam Kapoor), Meera (Shikha Talsania), and Sakshi (Swara Bhaskar) are childhood friends who reunite for one last bash before Kalindi’s marriage. Had the film not veered from its premise of best friends coming together after many years to have a blast only to bungle things along the way, the audience might have got a more entertaining flick. Instead, the film invests in pretty much everything from the abusive relationship between parents to cross-cultural marriage.
The filmmakers seem unsure of what they want, a rip-roaring comedy or a family drama. In the process, they fail to deliver adequate unabashed and undiluted scenes that show the girls having a merry time. Also, the half-baked relationships mar any chance of the audience connecting with the characters onscreen in any meaningful manner.
Rather than focusing on constructing scenes with the girls frisking around, the director squanders away the film’s potential by digressing via uninteresting and stereotypical characters that keep cropping up time and again.
A weak script sans enough engaging scenes or enduring characters doesn’t help its cause. Sakshi played by Swara Bhaskar is the only one who has somewhat edgy dialogues. However, since the rest of the characters are so unequivocally lackadaisical, it too loses its charm. Although, even her role isn’t exploited to the fullest, leaving one to ponder what might have been had the director shown some gumption to push the envelope a tad further.
Another obstacle to Veere Di Wedding fully realizing its potential is that all of its main characters come into the movie saddled with problems plaguing their individual lives, but none of them are convincing enough and end up as a liability throughout the film.
The viewers get some respite from the humdrum proceedings when the girls decide to go to Phuket. For a brief time, the film suddenly seems to find its groove. Although coming in the second half, it proves to be too little too late. Also, the film’s trailer has the best bits of the film that offers little beyond that.
Without a single memorable song, Veere Di Wedding isn’t going to stay for long in the memory of the viewers. It is hard to fathom why after spending oodles of money, the filmmakers couldn’t come up with catchy songs. Failing to draw sufficient laughs, Veere Di Wedding risks letting down even the most ardent supporters of this genre. Finally, if you want to be even marginally entertained by the film, it is advisable to keep your expectations rather low.
