PK Movie Review

PK Movie Review

If there is one actor that you can bank upon to deliver one hit movie after another, it has to be Aamir Khan. Let’s make it clear then that PK is an Aamir Khan show, and everything else is secondary. At its heart, PK is an entertaining movie that also happens to tell us a thing or two about religion and god-men. Why is it not the other way round? Well, in that case, it wouldn’t have been an entertaining Bollywood movie, would it?

PK makes no sense whatsoever for the first 30 minutes or so. It’s only close to the hour mark that it starts to find its groove. At its crescendo, you see an anguished Aamir Khan doing matam. This high point is not to be achieved again for the remainder of the movie.

Yes, religion does more harm than good, and godmen are an absolute no-no. You can believe in God, but that is something personal and should help motivate and strengthen you. That’s about in a nutshell what PK philosophizes. PK played by Aamir Khan is an alien (who looks just like a human being) who has come to Earth for a short visit. On account of his amulet being stolen, PK finds himself stranded on Earth. All he wants to do is to procure his talisman as soon as possible.

While all this is happening in Rajasthan, halfway across the globe, Jaggu (Anushka Sharma) meets Sarfraz (Sushant Singh) in Bruges, and they decide to marry. However, her orthodox father, played by Parikshit Sahni, doesn’t take this too well. In the end, however, things don’t turn out as expected, and Jaggu returns to India. Back home, she works as a reporter for a TV station run by Boman Irani. As she stumbles upon PK wandering around in search of his talisman, she realizes that this could be her next big story. Jaggu decides to pursue PK. On narrating to her that which has befallen him upon landing on Earth, Jaggu is skeptical at first. However, PK convinces her that he is telling the truth.

Meanwhile, the amulet has been tracked to a fraud god-man, Tapasvi Maharaj (Saurabh Shukla). Recovering it from him is not going to be easy for PK even with the help from Jaggu. PK will need to fight with all his resolve to break through the false aura created by this godman. Also, losing his friend Bhairon Singh (Sanjay Dutt) only makes matters worse for him. Will he succeed? The final act of PK ensues.

PK kept me just about entertained for 2.5 hours, but the moment I stepped out of the theater, it evaporated from my mind, and so will it from yours, I guess. If I desired to see a light-hearted yet poignant Aamir Khan movie, I’d see 3 Idiots. If I wished to see a hard-hitting, adrenaline pumping Aamir Khan movie, I’d watch Rang De Basanti.
